Pain-Free Lashes: Does Eyelash Extension Application Hurt & Why Some Fall Out
Pain-Free Lashes: Does the Application Hurt & Why Do Some Extensions Fall Out?
Hi, I’m Nina Andrews, owner of Lashes On Point and lash artist for over 16 years — and I’ve heard every lash-related question under the sun! One of the most common ones (and understandably so) is:
“Does getting eyelash extensions hurt?”
and right behind it… “Why do my extensions fall out so quickly?”
Let’s break both down — in plain English — so you can understand exactly what’s normal, what’s not, and how to keep your lashes comfortable, healthy, and long-lasting.
First Things First: Lash Extensions Should NEVER Hurt
If your lash appointment feels painful, stingy, or uncomfortable — that’s a red flag. When applied properly, eyelash extensions should feel completely weightless.
At Lashes On Point, we use advanced techniques and LED lash adhesive that cures instantly and eliminates fumes — meaning no eye irritation, no burning, and no waiting around for glue to “set.”
You should walk out of your appointment feeling fresh, fluttery, and fabulous — not sore or sticky.
Why Some People Feel Discomfort
If you’ve ever had an uncomfortable experience elsewhere, here are the most common reasons why:
-
Poor isolation technique: When lashes aren’t properly separated, extensions can stick together and pull.
-
Incorrect lash weight or curl: If extensions are too heavy or long for your natural lashes, they can cause strain.
-
Low-quality adhesive: Cheap or outdated glues can emit strong fumes that irritate eyes.
-
Improper aftercare: Sleeping face-down, rubbing your eyes, or skipping lash cleanses can lead to tangling and discomfort.
A true professional lash artist — especially one trained in modern LED techniques — will tailor every lash to your natural growth pattern and thickness to ensure total comfort.
Why Some Extensions Fall Out (and Why It’s Totally Normal)
Here’s something most clients don’t realise: you naturally shed 2–5 lashes per day.
Above is The Lash Growth Cycle, here you can clearly see the 3 growth stages from a Lash Techs view. If you missed it, read our related post: Understanding the Lash Growth Cycle; and why refills matter.
Each natural lash has its own life cycle — growing, resting, and shedding — just like the hair on your head. When one of those natural lashes reaches the end of its cycle, your extension attached to it will fall out too. Totally normal.
However, if you notice excessive shedding (like whole clusters falling off within a few days), these might be the culprits:
-
Oil-based products breaking down adhesive (However our LED ADHESIVE is not affected by oils)
-
Sleeping on your face or side (hello, friction!)
-
Skipping aftercare (dirt and oil weaken retention)
-
Touching or brushing too aggressively
-
Seasonal shedding — yes, your lashes can respond to climate changes!
At Lashes On Point, we guide every client through a simple, realistic aftercare routine that keeps lashes clean, healthy, and long-lasting.
Pro Tip: Clean Lashes Last Longer
Many clients fear washing their lashes — but clean lashes are happy lashes!
Use an oil-free lash cleanser and a soft brush to gently remove dirt and makeup buildup. This keeps your lash line clear and your extensions bonded beautifully. A complimentary after-care kit is provided to each new client and this included FREE lash shampoo refills)
